Old Moat and Age Friendly Manchester
WHO AFCC Neighbourhood
£60,000
The Old Moat project created a unique implementation of the World Health Organisation Age Friendly Cities and Communities guidance in a specific neighbourhood, employing an advanced co-production methodology addressing the WHO principle of ‘Active Ageing’. The project developed an age friendly neighbourhood planning process supporting co-production and intersectional action, creating a methodology, tools and representations addressing the implementation model of the WHO commission on the structural and social determinants of health. Local Older residents remain involved in the delivery of the identified actions until today.
Commissioned by the Southway Housing Trust Design for Life undertook the project in partnership with the University of Manchester. The project was run live alongside a Manchester School of Architecture Masters studio and aligned student projects for the area and their creative community engagements supported the co-production processes to create a local neighbourhood action plan and tool kit.
It has been widely disseminated, shared with governmental representatives from around the world and referred to at the UN, by the OECD and the AARP. It was presented at the United Nations Working Group on Aging in New York on 16th of July 2015.
