Carol Atkinson

Professor of Human Resource Management, Business School, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK ​

Professor Atkinson is a Professor of Human Resource Management, researching work and employment and is a member of Decent Work and Productivity research group. She is currently leading the NIHR-funded investigating pay variation in adult social care project and has other projects around gender pay gaps and menopause in the workplace.​

Her research focuses on how to create good work and employment. In particular, how to create high-quality employment in the adult social care sector, how to improve work quality by improving gender equality, for example, gender pay gaps and menopause in the workplace, and how to create high-quality employment in small and medium-sized enterprises.

Professor Atkinson carries out research into older workers – mechanisms to extend their working lives. There is a particular focus on older women and menopause transition in the workplace – how to support and retain during this life phase.​
